Who we are.
The Black Canvas was founded by Khyati Dodhia - a photographer, maker, artist and crafter. With an education in advertising, almost a decade's worth of experience in the field of professional photography, short stints in the movie making & media industry and a deep interest in design and art, Khyati has had a varied background.
The Black canvas has been a natural progression to exploring a new journey in her life. It started with a simple desire to make a beautiful handcrafted product that would be valuable and unique. This product was a classic hand stitched black leather journal with some beautiful Tree of Life hand painted art.
Since then, The Black Canvas has been dedicated to crafting quality leather products that are made with thoughtfulness, attention to detail and most importantly, love.

The Black Canvas is a brand and online store of well designed, durable and meticulously curated quality leather products for you to treasure.
Based in the heart of India - Bombay, we design our leather products that are manufactured by some of the most talented craftsmen in Dharavi, Asia's largest slum. We believe in employing local talent and supporting smaller homegrown businesses.
We handpick all our leathers and materials by hand, making sure they match our high quality standards. All our craftsmen understand our design philosophy and strive to create honest, quality products that will last a lifetime.
Our aim with The Black Canvas is to create beautiful products that inspire in people, the same intimacy and belongingness we feel when crafting them. A sense of home.
